Gardening in Swansboro

Swansboro sits where the White Oak River meets the Intracoastal Waterway, and that water shapes the yards here. Most lots have light, sandy soil that drains fast and holds few nutrients, so in-ground gardens dry out quickly in July. Lots closer to the creeks and the river can be the opposite — low spots that stay soggy for days after a hard rain.

A raised bed solves both problems. If you add soil fill, we use a rich soil mix, so your plants are not fighting the sand, and the bed sits above wet ground. Swansboro is in USDA Zone 8a/8b, with the first frost usually arriving around the start of November, so a well-placed bed can grow something almost all year.

The yards we see here

Many Swansboro neighborhoods have tall pines and live oaks. They are beautiful, but they cast long shadows and drop needles that sour the soil.
